„So heritage, I think in such a city, should be redefined. Its not the architectural value of a building.“

Saba Innab, Architect and Artist working between Amman and Beirut

In many parts of the city the cultural heritage is going to fall into ruins. This map shows abandoned buildings in the Eastern part of the city. We have gotten interested in the upcoming atmosphere that looks like a setting.

The city of Beirut is characterized by a high density. The city center is seen clearly with its empty grounds. It is located in the end of the former greenline, that split the city during the civil war (1975-1990) into the eastern and western part.

Zitat public space

„It’s a highly densed city with no public open space.“

where is beirut

Beirut is located in the middle of the Republic of Lebanon at the mediterranian coast. The Lebanon borders on syria in the north and the east and on Israel in the south. It has 5 million inhabitans, almost half of them living in Beirut.

More than one week we spent in Beirut. On the one hand we focused our research on refugees and ruins but on the other hand we collected many other impressions as well. This documentation shows our experiences in form of photographs, movies, sounds, notes and findings.

exposé beirut

For us Beirut is a very interesting city, characterized by contrasts. modern high-rise buildings grow up beside destroyed buildings that still wear the signs of the civil war. Syrian refugees are begging between Ferrari and Lamborghini on the streets. Before we flight out to the Lebanon we researched about the topics of ruins and refugees in Beirut.
